Plants do more than just clean our air and look pretty. In many cultures, specifically within Feng Shui practices, certain plants are believed to attract wealth, prosperity, and good energy (“Chi”) into a home.
Whether you are superstitious or just love lush greenery, these tropical beauties are a win-win. Here are my top 7 picks for bringing good vibes to your living space.
1. Money Tree (Pachira Aquatica)
The classic. Recognizeable by its braided trunk and five-lobed leaves (representing the five elements).
- Why it’s lucky: Legend says a poor farmer prayed for money, found this plant, sold it, and became wealthy. It symbolizes trapping fortune within its braided trunk.
- Care: Bright indirect light and deep watering only when the soil is dry.
2. Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena Sanderiana)
Technically not a bamboo, but a Dracaena. You’ll often see these grown in water.
- Why it’s lucky: The number of stalks matters! 3 for happiness, 5 for wealth, 6 for luck. Avoid 4 (associated with death in Chinese culture).
- Care: incredibly low maintenance. Just keep the water fresh and keep it out of direct scorching sun.
3. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
Also known as “Mother-in-Law’s Tongue.”
- Why it’s lucky: While spiky plants are sometimes avoided in Feng Shui, the Snake Plant is revered for its ability to purify air and absorb negative energy. It’s a protector plant.
- Care: The “unkillable” plant. Low light, low water. It thrives on neglect.
4. Jade Plant (Crassula Ovata)
A succulent with coin-shaped, fleshy leaves.
- Why it’s lucky: The round leaves resemble jade coins. It is traditionally placed near the entrance of a business or home to welcome prosperity.
- Care: It’s a succulent, so it needs sunshine and very little water. Overwatering is its main killer.
5. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
Beautiful dark green leaves with striking white blooms.
- Why it’s lucky: As the name suggests, it harmonizes energy and promotes peace. The white flag-like flowers symbolize a cease-fire to stress.
- Care: Tells you when it’s thirsty by drooping dramatically, then perks up immediately after watering.
6. Rubber Plant (Ficus Elastica)
With its large, glossy, rounded leaves.
- Why it’s lucky: Round leaves are generally good in Feng Shui for softening sharp corners (which harbor cutting energy). It represents abundance.
- Care: Bright, indirect light. Wipe the leaves occasionally to keep them glossy and photosynthesizing efficiently.
7. Orchids
Elegant and long-lasting flowers.
- Why it’s lucky: They traditionally symbolize fertility, abundance, and luxury. Violet orchids are specifically associated with wealth.
- Care: They need specific “orchid bark” mix, not regular soil. They love humidity but hate having “wet feet” (roots sitting in water).
Where to place them? Generally, the Southeast corner of your home is considered the “Wealth Corner” in Feng Shui. Placing a healthy, vibrant plant there is said to activate the energy of abundance.
Happy planting, and good luck!
